Mexicana and
Aerocaribe It is the Capital of Chiapas since 1982. It`s population goes beyond 500,000 inhabitants and it has a warm weather due to its latitude under 450 masl. In the “pre colonial” époque, it was part of the powerful Chiapas Indians. By the time, its name was “Tuchtlán”, which means Rabbits Place. Currently, it is the biggest city in the State, and it holds the highest commercial, financial and political activities in Chiapas. Currently, one can arrive at Tuxtla from the center of the country; through the modern highway which takes a total of 9 hours from Mexico City. One can also get there through the Pan-American highway: 540 Km. from Oaxaca and 460 km. from Huatulco. Villahermosa is at 290 km. to the North. Traveling by first class busses which come from Mexico City, Oaxaca, Huatulco, Veracruz, Villahermosa, Palenque, Tapachula and Mérida is possible. Mexicana, Aerocaribe and Aviacsa flying companies, have several flights from Mexico City and the main cities of the southeast of Mexico. Attractiveness: Around central square, there are the municipal government, state and legislative palaces; the cathedral with doric columns; the musical carillon; the old municipal palace in a mudejar style and red brick walls. Recommended visits: the archaeological museum in Madero Park, and the interesting regional Zoo. Historical city located among the Big or Grijalva River, at 14 Km. from Tuxtla Gutiérrez City. The strategic location in the crossing of the river and in the encounter point of the central depression with the Altos region, facilitated an early population growth that dates from 1400 B.C. An otomanbue ethnos, the “Chiapanecas”, arrived at the place toward the year 1000, subduing their neighbors. Through them, they had contact the Spaniards. First in 1524, when the expedition of Luis Marín arrived, and then in 1528, with the conquering entrance of Diego de Mazariegos. After the conquest, Chiapa became an “encomienda” and later on it turned into a direct dependence of the Spanish Crown. This is why the city received the name of Chiapa de la Corona Real (of the Real Crown). In 1821, the city joined the independence movement which started in Comitán City, and it was a scenary during the XIX Century of the big fights between liberal and conservatives. The battle of October 21,1863 was determinant for the victory of the Reformation in Chiapas. By the time, it was Ángel Albino Corzo´s government period, and this is where Chiapa de Corzo took its last name. |
